Established in the year 1995–96, Velammal Engineering College is a self-financing minority institution located in Surapattu, in Thiruvallur district in Chennai. The college is run by the Velammal Educational Trust, which was instituted in the year 1986 by Thiru. M.V. Muthuramalingam Thevar and is a registered non-minority service organization. The engineering college is approved by the AICTE and is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. It also happens to be the first private engineering institution to obtain the ISO accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

The premier engineering institution offers Bachelor’s degrees in engineering across a range of fields including old favourites such as civil, production, mechanical and electrical and electronics as well as newer, popular choices such as the computer sciences, automobile, IT, instrumentation and electronics and communication engineering. Masters in engineering degrees offered by the college include the fields of embedded system technologies, mobile and pervasive computing, power systems, applied electronics, computer sciences, and internal combustion engineering. Apart from engineering programs, the Velammal Engineering College also offers post-graduate students the Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA). The college also operates the department of humanities and sciences, under which it runs the departments of physics, mathematics, chemistry and English. Each department has faculties, some of whom are doctorates while others are pursuing doctorates in various disciplines. Admission to all programs are divided under government and management quotas and are purely on merit. The college has also established extensive research and development activities on campus, with many interesting on-going research projects worth almost INR 1.67 crores.

The college is situated 7 km from Anna Nagar, in serene and calm surroundings on the Ambattur–Red hills road. Apart from well-equipped classrooms and labs, the college also has a mineral water plant, a well-stocked canteen which also stocks cosmetic, medicinal and stationery items as well as separate hostels for boys and girls and spacious mess facilities for the students. The college also provides free health care services to both students and staff, and has also established the student counselling service, where designated staff counsellor counsels each student one in a fortnight. In order to encourage and motivate students to perform well in academics, the college offers cash rewards and medals to university rank holders, cash rewards to semester toppers and even incentives for faculty members in case all their students pass in a particular year.

Velammal engineering college even provides vans and buses for students and staff travelling from all parts of Chennai city. In fact, the college arranges for special after-hours buses for the convenience of staff and students who are involved in co-curricular, academic and sports activities. The institution thus supports the holistic development of students so that they grow up not only to perform well in their field but face any and every situation that comes their way. Today, the premier engineering institution maintains its status of being amongst the top 5 engineering colleges out of the almost 250 engineering colleges spread across the state of Tamil Nadu.
