Green House
Patches of herbs such as coriander and green chillies, a little bit of sylvan here and there, a motley collection of fresh sprigs and fresh flowers – a terrace green house is one of the ways to soothe the senses in the suffocating ambience of urban India. Today, an increasing number of people are turning to rooftop green houses to bring not only a sense of aesthetic appeal, but also to make use of the fresh veggies in their own cooking. A not–so–new concept, converting terraces into gardens and green houses have been the answer to the prayers of those blessed with a green thumb.
Essentially, green houses, also known as glasshouses or hothouses, are structures where flowering plants, fruits, and veggies are grown in controlled temperatures. The walls and roofs are usually made of either glass or plastic, and the structure not only keeps away pests but protects plants from extreme weather conditions. The roofs are usually flexible to be opened up and can be used differently in according to the weather conditions. Green houses make up for the lack of space for people in urban India to build gardens and lawns.
Building a terrace green house doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. At the outset, people need not invest in earthen or fancy pots and can make do with plastic bottles, bathtubs and buckets to grow veggies and condiments. People can even make their own soil with kitchen waste. Leftovers of non-veg food and skins of veggies and fruits can be mixed with curd, and covered with rotten leaves and sand, can be very easily converted into organic manure, which is excellent for growing plants. People should also remember to mulch their soil with dry leaves and newspapers to avoid loss of water due to evaporation. People should also keep sprinkling red earth from time to time. People go as far as using egg shells, expired vitamin and calcium for growing plants better, but that is another extreme.
Seeds can be sourced for cheap from any nursery, and they need to be open pollinated, not hybrid. People can start off by growing basic condiments such as green chillies, lemon grass, spinach, kadi patta (curry leaves), mint leaves, ginger, turmeric, and basil as they are the simplest to grow and don’t require much sunlight. Once one becomes with familiar with growing the simple things, they can graduate to vegetables such as onions, radish, capsicums, cauliflowers, cabbages, okras, cucumbers and tomatoes. People should remember that tomatoes need a trellis to grow, or they will fall. Gradually, they can also grow fruits such as pineapples, pomegranates, bananas and guavas since they require space.
Ideally, the pots and tubs with the plants should be placed or hung in the east – west direction in order for them to get adequate sunlight. All people need to do is maintain their green house by pruning, supporting, watering and providing nutrition to them regularly.
It is no wonder why people are turning to such gardens for a breath of fresh air.
