As a part of the Navy Week activities, the eastern naval Command (ENC) hosted the Vizag Navy Half Marathon, late last year. The event that was open for Indians as well as foreigners was in control of three categories – a half-marathon of 21.1 km likewise as 10 km and 5 km races. All the runs began from Kursura Submarine museum on Beach Road and transcended the Kailasagiri ropeway, towards Rushikonda on the coast and then returned via Beach Road to the finishing purpose at the naval Coastal Battery.

The Andhra Pradesh government is keen on developing Visakhapatnam as Tourist Hub. A leisure night package tour bus was also launched by the state tourism development corporation. Rishikonda beach resort of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, a much sought-after place of stay for tourists, was battered by Vizag Hudhud.
The Beach Corridor Project between Visakhapatnam and Bhimili, taken up at a cost of Rs 42 crore, was also hit by Hudhud. Thotlakonda and Baavikonda, close to Vizag on the Beach Road leading to Bhimili, that houses the ruins of Buddhist era, now remain ruined, though partially.

After Chennai, Mumbai and Tuticorin, smugglers used Visakhapatnam port to ship red sanders felled in the Seshachalam forests. There are at least three cases that are being investigated by the directorage of revenue intelligence sleuths here, who confiscated containers, carrying red sanders. But there are also reports that many such consignments get past unnoticed. The role of customs sleuths is also being probed. In one incident the shipper declared the cargo was granite and in another incident, refractory mortar was declared; in both cases red sanders were filled in the containers destined for Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Interestingly in two of these three cases, containers containing red sander logs came from Rourkela and Cuttack in Odisha to the Visakhapatnam port, which shows that smugglers hoodwinked many checkposts. In another case, the container was from Chennai. Due to increased vigilance and tightening of security at Mumbai, Chennai and Tuticorin ports, that were once safe havens for red sanders smugglers, the activity has shifted to Vizag. However, the vigilance and DRI sleuths are able to crack only certain cases.
The first such case was detected in May 2013, where DRI officials seized 16 tonnes of red sanders from a container that was about to be loaded into a Malaysia bound vessel. While the container has a capacity of carrying 28 tonnes the Rourkela-based shipper had declared 18 tonnes of refractory mortar as cargo. When opened, the container had 400 logs of red sanders weighing approximately 16 tonnes. The container was sealed at the premises of the shipper in Rourkela in Odisha. In such cases if the cargo is stuffed in the premises of the consignee, the central excise sleuths have to seal the container after verifying the cargo. But after the container reached the Visakhapatnam port terminal, on a tip off DRI sleuths stopped it and found red sander logs.

Essar Ports announced its taking over of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust’s (VPT) iron ore handling complex on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis for a period of 30 years. Essar Vizag Terminals Ltd.(EVTL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Essar Ports, will comprise of three berths (two outer harbour berths and one inner harbour berth) with a combined capacity of 23 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) which will be developed in two phases. EVTL signed the concession agreement with VPT a year ago for development and operation of three world class iron ore berths.

EVTL has taken over the ore handling complex (OHC) of the VPT by making an upfront payment of Rs.185 crore. In addition, EVTL will also pay a revenue share to VPT. It is sure that Essar will develop the (OHC) facility with latest state-of-the-art handling facilities and achieve higher loading rate thereby reducing the overall turn around by at least 50 percent.
The project will be developed at a cost of Rs.1,200 crore over a period of three years, and will cover the upgradation of outer harbour berths I and II in the first phase and mechanization of inner harbour berths in Phase II. Visakhapatnam port received 55 percent of total iron ore handled by all major ports during the last financial year, which is a new record.
Visakhapatnam Port Trust had handled close to 14 MT of iron ore during the financial year 2014, the highest by any port in the country. The port has already awarded work to expand the existing container terminal with a natural depth of 16.5 metres to Visakha Container Terminal Ltd, a joint venture of DP World and United Liners Agencies of India, at a cost of Rs.633 crore.

The AP government has accorded Industrial Area Local Authority (IALA) status to the Rushikonda IT Park, a special economic zone (SEZ), spread over 200 acre on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. The IALA status allows units to de-notify from the purview of the IT SEZ. The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) will function as the IALA. It exercises certain statutory powers and functions such as assessment, levy and collection of taxes from the occupants in areas that fall in APIIC’s industrial estates.

“Currently, maintenance of roads, street lights, drainage and other amenities by the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation is very poor in the IT SEZ area. With the new status, the IT units can now have a choice for good maintenance without depending on the local corporation,” Vishnu Kumar Raju, president of the Rushikonda IT Park Units Association and member of the Legislative Assembly (Vizag north), told Business Standard.
At present, close to 20 IT units are operating out of the Rushikonda IT Park, while about 35 units are expected to set up shop over the next two years. The state government recently allotted 10 acre to Tech Mahindra here. This decision (IALA status) will help attract new and major IT players to the Rushikonda IT SEZ area.

Also offered to the lord were Pattuvastramulu (new clothes) at Visakhapatnam Chandanotsavam.

Visakhapatnam Rushikonda is one of the most popular tourist locations which receives tourists from West Bengal, Odisha and other States during the peak tourism months of October-December. The damage and impact of the cyclone has been the most in this place. Almost all the rooms were damaged. All the tourists had been shifted from Rushikonda to Haritha Resort opposite Appu Ghar, following the massive damage. Roads leading to APTDC’s Jungle Bells Resort at Tyda had also been badly damaged due to the cyclone.
Following the news of the devastating effect of the cyclone, tourists had been cancelling the hotel rooms booked earlier. It is horrifying to see the destruction around. The people were surviving on basic food items by paying five times the cost. It is hard to imagine this is the same city after the cyclone swept off.
While the APTDC resort perched atop the hill paints a devastating picture of the impact of the cyclone, for the fishing community and the local shops dotting the popular Rushikonda beach, it seemed like ‘an end of the road’. The stalls were the only livelihood of the vendors who used to sell refreshments, local handmade shell crafts and other small items for the tourists. The fishermen at Visakhapatnam Rushikonda have lost all their boats to the enormous intensity of the cyclonic storm that engulfed the coast.

After the devastating Vizag Hudhud, the fishermen who suffered losses were sanctioned funds. A large amount out of Rs.14.07 crore sanctioned to fishermen for the damages suffered during cyclone Hudhud to their boats and towards release of subsidy for construction of 300 new boats in lieu of the fibre crafts lost has lapsed for failure to utilise them by March 31. Of the sanctioned amount, Rs.8.07 crore has been earmarked for payment of relief to the fishermen affected by Vizag Hudhud and sanction of 50 per cent subsidy for construction of new boats in place of the crafts lost.

On utilisation of subsidy component, the Collector said that bankers had not given consent in time for construction of new boats in the place of boats lost and only Rs.8 lakh had been utilised against Rs.6 crore by March 31. Enquiries revealed that a revised GO had to be released for payment of additional amount of Rs.2 lakh to 38 damaged mechanised boats as per the promise made by Chief Minister.
Vizag Hudhud caused heavy damage to the mechanised and traditional boats which were anchored at the fishing harbour a few days before the cyclone battered the coast. The authorities concerned are being pursued for release of the funds again.

Soon Smart City Vizag hopes to see the last of streetlights blazing away way after the sun has risen in the sky or dark streets post sunset with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) all set to install a central control and monitoring system (CCMS) to cut down on power wastage in the street lighting system. The system will be set up by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture between public sector undertakings of the Union power ministry, and monitored by the AP State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM).
Smart City Vizag
The CCMS is the first of its kind to be used in monitoring the street lighting system of any civic body in the country. With the CCMS, all the streetlights would be switched on and off at the flick of a single switch. The sunrise and sunset timings would be fed into the system to operate streetlights in order to prevent energy wastage. Nearly 76,000 sodium vapour lamps in streetlights out of the total 91,775 in GVMC limits have been replaced by LED lamps.
EESL will be solely responsible for running the LED streetlights over the next seven years. This way it will be possible to conserve nearly 2.43 crore units per annum as against the average annual energy consumption of 3.92 crore units by the old street lighting system of Smart city Vizag.
Nearly 1200 LED lights out of 1300 LED lights that were not functioning properly were repaired. The initiative to install LED lights at Smart city Vizag was taken up by the state government to prevent power wastage.

Drawing a lesson from the devastation caused to their infrastructure in Visakhapatnam by the severe cyclonic storm Hudhud in October last year, Indus Towers Limited, a leading mobile tower company, has decided to install cyclone-resilient towers in vulnerable areas.

The company, which has invested Rs.34,000 crore on towers across the country, suffered extensive damage to 1,400 of 1,650 cell tower sites it has in the Hudhud-hit areas of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam.“We suffered huge losses in terms of our infrastructure along with the equipment damage caused to the telecom operators,” Indus Towers Andhra Pradesh & Telangana Circle CEO Sujit Sen told The Hindu on Thursday.
The damage was mainly due to wind speed that crossed 210 kilometres per hour. “As soon as Hudhud mauled the coast, causing complete breakdown of the communication system, I reached the city within 12 to 13 hours by road after mobilising 200-plus strong team from neighbouring States to take up restoration work,” he said, recalling his experience post-Hudhud.
On a request by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, they set up a war-type control room in the Visakhapatnam city by bringing various equipment and generators. Power blackout continued for almost a week in the main areas of the city. In some villages, power restoration took even two months. “After a lot of effort and team-work, we could restore telecom services in three weeks. Now, we want to install towers that can withstand a wind speed of 250 to 270 kmph,” Mr. Sen said.

Undue delay in commencement of Integrated Cargo Complex at the Visakhapatnam International Airport continues to hit exporters badly. In the absence of cold storages and other facilities, exporters are routing their cargo through Hyderabad and Chennai airports. This has been continuing, though modification of the old terminal building has been completed long ago. Exporters say that the stand-off between two government agencies — Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the AP Trade Promotion Corporation (APTPC) — over payment of dues should no longer be allowed to have an adverse impact on the industry.

“Exporters prefer to send 60 to 70 per cent of medicines through air, and cold storages near the Visakhapatnam International airport are essential to promote exports by air. The cold storages at the Visakhapatnam airport can be developed with funds under the ASIDE scheme,” Director-General of Pharmexcil said recently.
“Pending clearance of the dues by the APTPC, the AAI could allow two or three more private players for handling of cargo while retaining the APTPC as the custodian. When some of the berths in the Visakhapatnam Port have been privatised, there is nothing wrong in allowing private players to handle international cargo,” he said, and added that it was high time the Chief Minister and the Visakhapatnam MP resolved it at the earliest. While the domestic cargo operations are expected to begin soon in Visakhapatnam International Airport as the tender process has begun, the international cargo operations could take a longer time, official sources say.

Thousands Simhachalam land owners felt relieved when the CM assured them to take necessary steps to regularize Simhachalam temple lands. Thousands of people had bought lands from the middlemen, the plots which belonged to temples several years ago. Most of them had built houses and were living in the same with constant threats from the temple authorities. The distressed residents relied on courts for help and the cases had been pending since then for decades now.

Later a rule came into place, wherein those who had purchased the lands were to pay the cost of the land according to the then prevailing land rates in the market. Then about 2,400 persons of the total 6,600 Simhachalam land owners had paid for the land in their possession as per the G.O. and got them regularised. The remaining persons were misled by vested interests and refused to pay and hence their lands were not regularised. The number of such persons has now gone up to 12,000.
The Chief Minister said that those living on those lands for the past two decades or more would be issued property documents on payment of the market value of the land that prevailed in 1999. He also said that the Devasthanam would be given alternative land. However, this would not be valid for vacant land, he said and clarified that a list of genuine occupants and Simhachalam land owners had already been drawn up and the Government would go by it.

The work of Vizag Metro Rail Project has started. The Metro Rail project Adviser Metro Man of India Mr.Sridharan told media that the initial design will be submitted by the start of March. Two teams of engineers are surveying the city and a third team is also set up to investigate the possibilities of further development of the design and it is expected to arrive in the city this week.
3 corridors, 39 Kilometers
A total of three corridors are being planned for the Vizag metro and the details of them are as following.
Corridor 1:

The corridor will be built between Madhurawada junction and N.A.D. It is the largest of the three corridors and is approximately a 24 Kilometers long stretch passing along the National Highway and major areas of the City.
Corridor 2:
Vizag-Metro-Corridor-2
This will start form Gurudwara junction and passes through R.T.C complex, Rednam Gardens, Jagadamba junction, Kotha Road and ends at Old Post office.
This will be 7 Kilometers long.
Corridor 3:
Vizag-Metro-Corridor-3
It stars from Taatichetla Palem junction and passes through Railway new colony, Railway station, Reservation center, South Jailroad, Ambedkar statue, R.T.C complex, The Meghalaya hotel near G.M.V.C, Sampath Vinayak temple, Tycoon junction, Walter main road , Siripuram junction, Chinna Waltair and ends at park hotel, Beach Road. This would be approximately 8 Kilometer stretch.
Design
The estimation of the survey teams imply that a total of 60 pillars might be used for the whole Vizag metro project and one station is planned to be set up for every 1 to 1.5 Kilometers with a total of 32 stations for the whole project. It is also announced that the work will start from Madhurawada junction as it needs no land acquisitions and has all the permits from Municipality.
The initial plan will be ready by first half of March 2015 and once the plan is complete, it will be thoroughly inspected and the needed tenders will be called. The Metro Teams under the supervision of Shridharan are moving at a fast pace and the government is in plans of completing the Phase-1 of the project in 3-4 years.
