Drawing a lesson from the devastation caused to their infrastructure in Visakhapatnam by the severe cyclonic storm Hudhud in October last year, Indus Towers Limited, a leading mobile tower company, has decided to install cyclone-resilient towers in vulnerable areas.

The company, which has invested Rs.34,000 crore on towers across the country, suffered extensive damage to 1,400 of 1,650 cell tower sites it has in the Hudhud-hit areas of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam.“We suffered huge losses in terms of our infrastructure along with the equipment damage caused to the telecom operators,” Indus Towers Andhra Pradesh & Telangana Circle CEO Sujit Sen told The Hindu on Thursday.
The damage was mainly due to wind speed that crossed 210 kilometres per hour. “As soon as Hudhud mauled the coast, causing complete breakdown of the communication system, I reached the city within 12 to 13 hours by road after mobilising 200-plus strong team from neighbouring States to take up restoration work,” he said, recalling his experience post-Hudhud.
On a request by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, they set up a war-type control room in the Visakhapatnam city by bringing various equipment and generators. Power blackout continued for almost a week in the main areas of the city. In some villages, power restoration took even two months. “After a lot of effort and team-work, we could restore telecom services in three weeks. Now, we want to install towers that can withstand a wind speed of 250 to 270 kmph,” Mr. Sen said.
