How to Choose Energy Efficiency Lights?

light bulb sketch 400 clr 14170 3 300x300 How to Choose Energy Efficiency Lights?

Energy Efficiency Lights

Energy efficiency in lighting fixtures is an eco-friendly, energy bills-saving option fast catching the fancy of the urban populace. As the use of traditional, inefficient light bulbs decreases, numerous and varied efficient light bulb options are springing up every day.

Choosing a light bulb

With various kinds of light bulbs available today, it is essential for the consumers to understand their energy savings and also which light fixtures and uses the light bulbs are perfect for. Compact fluorescent lamps, more popularly known as CFLs, last up to 6 times longer than and are up to 80% more efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs, and are usually for general lighting. Nowadays, dimmable CFLs are also becoming extremely popular. Light-emitting diodes or LEDs last up to 15 times longer than standard bulbs and are perfect for areas and objects that need focused, bright lighting such as kitchen areas and staircase footlights. Halogen lamps/globes and infrared-coated halogen spotlights are 30% more efficient than usual light bulbs and are usually used for areas such as pantries, lofts and ducts where lights are switched on and off instantly. Linear fluorescent tubes are up to 80% efficient and are best for accent and feature lighting such as cupboard and cabinet lighting.

Bulb brightness and colour

Light bulbs ensuring energy efficiency come in a wide range of colour temperatures measured by Kelvin (K); the higher the K factor, the cooler is the light. If one wishes to have “warm” lighting, then yellow lights will work better, and if one wishes to have the light more on the cooler side, then white lighting will work the best. Yellow lights work better as accent lighting for artwork and fancy lamps whereas white works better for bathrooms and laundry rooms. “Warm white” is the same as standard bulbs and is perfect for bedrooms, hallways and lounges.

The “lumens” on the packaging indicates the bulb brightness, which essentially measures the light output of the bulb; the higher the lumens, the brighter the light. Similarly, the wattage of the bulb measures the energy input of the bulb, and the higher the wattage, the more the bulb costs to run. Lumens/watt indicates the light efficiency, which is how efficiently the bulb converts electricity into light. The higher the number, the more efficient the bulb is, and this will be helpful in zeroing down which bulb gives maximum output while using the least energy.

Other special features and aspects

  • Life – Other important features which will help people choose an energy-efficient light bulb is the life of the bulb, that is, the number of hours a bulb should last when in use.

  • Mercury – The amount of “mercury” that a bulb contains also helps; LEDs have no mercury and CFLs have about 5 mg.

  • Dimmable options – Dimmer switches are becoming popular alternatives to save on electricity. This aspect on the packaging shows if the bulb can be used with a dimmer switch or other electronic switches.

Lighting fixtures with energy efficiency greatly reduce the carbon footprint, apart from reducing the energy use and saving on energy bills.

Shriram Transport Finance: A Journey of Success

custom text delivery truck 13802 300x205 Shriram Transport Finance: A Journey of Success

Shriram Transport Finance

On Oct 17, 2012, CNBC TV18 Best Bank and Financial Institution Awards 2012 presented Shriram Transport Finance Company Limited, with an award that finally recognized their stellar business acumen and innovation. Awarded for being the ‘best NBFC’ in the ‘asset backed lending’ Shriram Transport Finance’s journey towards success, began with a spark of an idea that changed thousands of lives for better.

As a part of Shriram group, a huge conglomerate whose reputation in financial services is unparalleled, Shriram Transport Finance (STFC) was incorporated in the year, 1979 and registered under Reserve Bank. Unlike the hundred other companies that were offering loans to companies and corporate businesses, Shriram Transport Finance offered to finance a neglected group – small truck owners. Sadly small truck owners, were then an informal sector and the economists and policy makers of the government failed to realize the potential impact that this sector can have on economy.

What is remarkable about the leaders of this company is that they spotted the potential, in a segment, which no other bank or financial institution was willing to finance. They understood more about ‘aspiration marketing’ even before it became a chapter in business studies. At a time, when a truck driver could not get loans to own a truck, Shriram Transport Finance took a leap of faith and started financing them. A truck driver belonging to the low-income group hardly had any equity to get a loan or even to repay it. And that’s when Shriram Transport Finance came up with the idea of financing pre-owned trucks.

A momentous decision that fulfilled many dreams! Since then Shriram Transport Finance has been the backbone support of many young men who drove freight trucks and dreamed of owning their own vehicle. From being a mere driver, to an owner, Shriram Transport Finance has steered the ambitions of many towards success.

Today, Shriram Transport Finance is not only a leader in truck finance but they are also India’s largest asset based Non-Banking Finance Company. By backing a common man’s dream, Shriram Transport Finance became the most respected and reputed company in the financial market. Today the company has a network of 620 branches and 515 rural centres all over India. Tying up with over 500 private financiers, all over the country, Shriram was able to spread its wings to all parts of India.

Growing from strength-to-strength today, Shriram has 20% to 25% market share in pre-owned trucks and 7% to 8% share in new truck financing and the loyalty of over 850000 customers, who grew their business along with Shriram.

Shriram Transport Finance offers loans to purchase heavy-duty trucks, medium and intermediate and light duty trucks, pick-up and mini trucks, passenger vehicle, farm equipment and construction vehicles. The company also provides other services such as tyre finance, engine replacement finance, co-branded credit card and freight bill discounting. There are umpteen number of companies that offer loan but Shriram offers much more than that. They offer you a dream and gets you going!

Basics of Vastu Shastra

Comfortable home interior design 300x211 Basics of Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra deals with the science of architecture and construction of a building, house or any space and is usually applied in Hindu architecture. The age-old practice, based on some fundamental principles, lays out how the living space should be planned to channelize the positive energy in the lives of its inhabitants. The practice is based mostly on the building materials, directions and placement of objects in space, along with certain other minor factors. The correct application of Vastu techniques is known to have brought prosperity and peace for many households for centuries now. Although there are many principles used in Vastu, some of the basic ones have been summarized below –

According to the practice, the world is made up of five basic elements – Air, Earth, Fire, Water and Space. The science explains how to achieve harmony between the five elements.

  • Directions – Broadly speaking, the eastern direction stands for new beginnings, north is best for business people, the northeastern direction belongs to god, and the northwest belongs to interpersonal relationships.

  • Purchasing a plot – While purchasing a plot, Vastu Shastra says that the plot should not be of an irregular shape, with the ideal shape being a square or a rectangle with its length 1½ times its breadth. The plot should also not be too porous, and shouldn’t be near a hospital, temple or a graveyard. Additionally, if the plot is sloping, water should flow North/East and the higher ground should be towards South/West. Also, the plot should not face the west direction.

  • Home design – Similarly, the house’s design should also be rectangular/square-shaped, and designs such as triangles, V and U-shaped ones should be avoided. Lifts, walls, staircases, toilets, fixtures and even pillars and beams should be avoided in the center since it denotes Brahmasthana.

  • Rooms – The master bedroom should be on the Northwest/Southwest side and the children’s bedroom should be on the West/Northwest side of the house. While sleeping, people’s heads should point either South/East. The living room should be on the Northwest/West/South side whereas the dining room should be on the West side. The guest room should be towards the Northwest corner of the house and the study room should be in the Northeast corner. The prayer room for gods should always be in the East/North/Northeast direction. Some other things that need to be remembered are that one should face east while worshipping, the prayer room should not be used for sleeping and neither should it be located below the staircase.

  • Columns and pillars – The total number of columns used in the architecture of the building or the apartment, including those only for architectural or decoration purposes, should always be an even number.

  • Staircase – Vastu Shastra says that stairs in the home are best built in the western, southwest or southern direction of the house. If built in the north, it could bring about financial losses. However, unlike the columns and pillars, the number of steps should necessarily be an odd number. Additionally, Vastu says that people should begin climbing the stairs with their right foot first and finish it with the same foot.

Country Homes – Style Elements of a Spanish Country Home

http://ift.tt/1lZ1SCv

spring 1442505 m Country Homes – Style Elements of a Spanish Country Home

Country Homes

Spanish country homes have a wonderful air of old-world familiarity – stucco exteriors, arches and curves, wrought-iron elements and wooden beams. They are one of the few architectural styles to also feature beautiful balconies, patios and courtyards in their country home design. Usually having an asymmetrical, open one-storey floor plan and arcaded pathways, Spanish homes are heavy on drama. Summarized below are some elements of a Spanish country home –

Using wrought-iron

A prominent feature in Spanish country home architecture is the use of wrought-iron throughout the house. Originally used to protect homes from invaders, it gained popularity as a decorative material. Right from decorative stair railings and wall sconces to oversized entryway chandeliers to balcony loft railings, wrought-iron detailing adds luxurious elegance to the room.

Stucco exteriors and terracotta roof tiles

Curved red clay tiles are used for the roof to give the home a rustic, earthy and warm look. Multi-level rooflines add further symmetry and interest. The exteriors are usually made of roughly-textured stucco (a mix of lime/sand, water and cement) painted in white with heavy wood trim. Stucco is even found in fireplaces and kitchens.

Curves and arches

Arches and curves in Spanish country homes add immense grace to them. Beautiful archways, curved steps and staircases, curved alcoves, arched niches, and wooden, iron, or stained glass arched windows give a rustic look to the house.

Tiles

Hand-painted tiles are common popular features in a Spanish country home. Also, traditional Spanish Talavera tiles (tin-glazed pottery) are used within the homes, in spaces such as bathrooms and patios to create an eye-pleasing space. Even the Saltillo tiles, which are environment-friendly, warm terra-cotta tiles, are used.

Courtyards, patios and arcades

Arcades, patios and courtyards, are atypical elements of Spanish homes due to the concept of outdoor living. Arcades, which are a series of arches supported by columns, and patios have fireplaces allows people to linger outside late into the night.

Divided doors

Divided doors, made of sabino wood, are popular because they not only keep farm animals out but also allow for excellent ventilation.

Wooden ceiling beams

Also known as “vigas”, Spanish homes prominently feature wooden support beams in ceilings, which are placed perpendicular to slender strips of wood called “latillas”. Wooden beams are also used in fireplace mantels.

Accessories

Right from antique Spanish pottery, colourful paintings, and a traditional huipil (traditional Spanish garment) on furniture to oversized mirrors, crafted wrought-iron lanterns and dark-wood toned furniture, Spanish country homes are all about infusing life into the space using lots of colours. Red and gold fabrics on the furniture are also inspired by the Spanish Baroque style. Some homes even feature the banco in their entryways, which is essentially a built-in, plastered bench providing comfortable seating near the fireplace. Even the traditional entryway (zaguan) features traditional Spanish rugs and artwork to bring a whimsical look to the place.

Balconies and chimneys

Balconies designed to enjoy the views and the fresh air and tower-like chimneys with little windows are atypical of a Spanish country home.

Spreading his divine grace and boyish charms, Lord Muruga residing in Vallakottai Murugan Temple is located conveniently in the highway between Sriperambudur and Singaperumal Koil. Unlike other temples dedicated to Lord Muruga, where the residing main deity is small in size, Vallakottai Subramanya Swamy is the tallest Murugan statue in India. Vallakottai, known as Kodai Nagar in ancient times, was a part of Ilanji Kingdom.

Rich in heritage, Vallakottai Murugan Temple was constructed under the rule of King Bageerathan of Sankondpuram. This 1200-year-old cultural heritage temple has an interesting legend. It was believed to be the fort of ‘Vallan’, a demon or asura, who tortured Devas and Lord Muruga destroyed the asura to bring peace to the land. Vallan’s death wish was fulfilled and the Lord blessed the town with his name ‘Vallankottai’ or Fort of Vallan.

Tirupugazh, the Tamil ancient literature, has eight songs composed by Arunagirinadhar, an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga, as a dedication to Vallakottai Murugan. The temple has a holy tank called Vajra Theertham and its history are also quite interesting. According to temple legends a holy dip in the tank for seven weeks chanting the ‘Om Saravanabava’ mantra can restore all that we have lost in this life.

Celebrating all the festivals of Lord Muruga, Vallakottai Murugan Temple is well-known for its grandeur and rituals, reflecting age-old traditions. Thursdays are considered very auspicious for Lord Subramanya Swamy who along with his consorts, Valli and Devyanai are adorned with diamonds for special darshan. Recently renovated, the temple has a fresh new look, with an old-world charm.

Typical to all Murugan temples, devotees get to see the majestic peacock, Lord Subramanya Swami’s Vahanam, gracefully gliding and dancing in the temple premises. Not only does Lord Muruga shower his blessings on his devotees, the temple administration also feed over hundred needy people every day with its efficient ‘Annadaanam’ scheme.

Blessed with this divine grace is your own residential project Shriram ‘OneCity’ of Valarpuram, located in close vicinity to this famous temple. These vaastu-compliant residences have no physical compound walls separating the villas, thus ensuring harmony and a priceless feeling of living within the community. Children can now enjoy the outdoors with full safety while the elders can take a peaceful stroll along our well-planned landscapes.

Adding a crowning glory, to this comfortable life-style living is the divine presence of Lord Subramanya Swamy from Vallakottai Murugan Temple. When it comes to investing in the fast growing suburbs, Valarpuram is a viable and valuable option. With asset-appreciating growth and the auspicious presence of divine blessings, Shriram ‘OneCity’ is one investment that lets you rediscover the joys of living.

Vastu Tips for Family Portraits

Vastu Tips to Display Photographs

Vastu tips have certain pre-decided, appropriate directions in which people can place pictures of them and their families in their homes for good and positive vibrations and energies. Pictures and family portraits are one of the best forms of capturing and remembering memorable times. Looking at happy pictures of such times together makes people feel good about those moments and cherish and treasure them.

However, according to the ancient art of Vastu, there are few specified directions only where one should place such family pictures. Apparently, it is believed that placing photographs and pictures of the family members in the wrong direction or on the wrong wall could be potentially harmful for the relationships. Right from pictures of one’s ancestors to those of one’s children, every picture has an assigned space in order to yield a positive result. Summarized below are certain Vastu tips for placing pictures of family members around the house –

Family photographs – Family photographs should be placed ideally on the South west wall of the house so as to strengthen bonds of relationships between family members and also helps maintain cordial relations between them. Family photographs should not be placed on the eastern or the northern walls. Additionally, this can also be applied as a corrective measure for familial clashes and troubles. That is, in case there have been clashes between the members of the family, they will be sorted out soon. One can hang family photos on the west wall, so as to get solar energy. It is also a good idea to place a happy family photo in the correct direction in the living room. If one is thinking about having pictures in the kitchen, photographs of the family enjoying eating food together is the best bet. Vaastu tips also mention that photographs of children should ideally be placed on the eastern wall whereas married couples should keep their photo taken together in their bedroom.

Photographs of ancestors – It is said that the south-west direction is ruled by Pitru, or our ancestors. Thus, images of late ancestors should ideally be hung in the south western, west, or the southern walls of the house, as it is believed that doing so ensures that their souls rest in peace. These pictures are best hung in the living/drawing room. However, the pictures of late ancestors should not be placed on the north-eastern wall or in the puja (worship) room or any room where god is worshipped as it is considered inauspicious. Additionally, pictures of loved ones who have passed away should not be placed in the bedroom as it attracts negative energy.

Symmetry in the photographs – Vastu tips specifically mention about there being symmetry in the hanging photographs of the family. That is, one side of the wall should not contain photos more than the remaining three sides. This means that all walls should have an equal number of pictures and there should not be any disproportion in the number of photos on the wall.

Cool House Plans – How to Design a Holiday House?

ivy covered house 400 clr 12466 4 262x300 Cool House Plans How to Design a Holiday House?

Cool House Plans for a Holiday Home

Cool house plans for a vacation home range from a 2-bedroom quaint and cozy mountain cabin to a luxurious, 2-storey condo on the beachfront. Whether one’s beach home is a lake retreat, a dreamy beach cottage, log cabin or a rustic mountain cottage, holiday homes should be designed to be your home away from home. The only thumb rule to be followed is – to reflect the destination where the holiday home is in its décor in order to enhance the beauty of the space. Summarized below are certain designing tips for a relaxing holiday home –

Inspired escapes

When it comes to inspired décor, natural objects found in the area around the vacation house make for some of the best decorating objects in the house. For example, driftwood fashioned into whimsical art and log gardens or branches of a bare tree wrapped in a string of lights make for some beautiful décor in a mountain or a country cottage. Similarly, corals, seashells, wild sea flowers and coloured pebbles make for some great accoutrements for a beach vacation home.

Furniture

Cool house plans are those which make use of furniture keeping in mind the location of the place, in order to give it a destination-inspired feel. Second hand furniture painted white and sanded back to give a weathered and beaten look makes for great beach house furniture, and so do coloured pouffes, low coffee tables, and wicker chairs. For rustic and mountain homes, wooden furniture works best, with reclaimed wood slowly climbing popularity charts for being used in wooden furniture. Wooden ski racks, mud benches and bunk beds for a mountain cabin, and wooden closets and cupboards, stump-shaped coffee tables for a country home make for great furniture elements.

Colours

White, beige and light sand-coloured hues, aqua and other shades of blue look the best on the walls of a beach house, as it gives the feeling of relaxation of lying right on the beach. For rustic, mountain and country homes, natural colours work best. Country blue, dusty rose, burgundy, light brown and forest green colours with a dull finish will be perfect for mountain, country and rustic home.

Accessories

Home furnishing is incomplete without accessories. Vintage accessories up the ante on the rustic décor with iron chandeliers, gazebos and faucets, layered cowhides, vintage crockery sets. Deer, elk and moose antlers, large mirrors, stone sculptures, rustic lampshades and wooden and metal bookshelves make for great modern accessories in a mountain home. As for beach homes, spare trinkets, driftwood, coloured sand-filled glass jars, nautical rope coasters, and sand candles make for some great sea-inspired accessories.

Lighting elements

Some of the best cool house plans feature the best lighting fixtures. Lighting elements enhance the charm of the house. For holiday homes, accent and dim lighting works best, as it gives off a dreamy and relaxed look to the interiors. Mason jars-turned-wall sconces, skylights, elegant chandeliers and wall-mounted swing lamps for night-time reading are excellent lighting fixtures for a perfect holiday home.

Right Beds for One Bedroom Apartments

bedroom1 300x195 Right Beds for One Bedroom Apartments

One Bedroom Apartments

Beds in one bedroom apartments needn’t be kitschy and tiny. Right from cleverly concealed and loft beds to Murphy and sofa-cum beds, finding the right bed for the tiny apartment not only opens up the living area and increases usable space, but also ends up creating that magical sleeping nook. Summarized below are some great beds and space-saving techniques that can make sleeping and living in a tiny space amazing rather than just bearable –

Murphy beds

Murphy beds, a.k.a. wall/fold-down/pull-down beds are hinged art one end to be stored vertically inside a cabinet/closet or against a wall. Murphy beds can double up as home-office desks, gorgeous bookshelves, storage units, and entertainment units, or they can simply look great propped up against the wall. For example, a “Tama” Murphy bed is a full-sized mattress and desk combination, a “Leo” Murphy bed is a single bunk bed model with a storage shelf and a concealed mattress, and a “Tale” murphy bed is a computer desk doubling up as a Murphy mattress.

The pulley bed

Beds hanging from the ceiling attached to pulleys are probably the best way to make use of the height and save floor space in a one bedroom apartment. Acting as a statement piece, such beds can be suspended in sturdy wrought-iron baskets.

Loft beds

One bedroom apartments which resemble studio apartments of the west are becoming popular in India. In such a case, loft bed can serve as an excellent idea if the comfort and the ceiling height permit it. In case there is no staircase, using ladders solves the accessibility problem easily. In fact, newer designs are adapting the concept of lofted folding beds, which are a mix of the Murphy and loft beds.

Futons, sofa-beds and couch-beds

Modular couches, futons, pull-out couches, and sofa-cum-beds make for some great space savers. Not only do they serve as stylish, compact and comfortable day furniture, but they also double up as beds for sleeping on.

Bunk beds

One of the oldest ideas for saving on sleeping space, bunk beds, as a concept, is not only for kids anymore. Full-size loft beds are the best-kept space saving secret when it comes to bedroom layouts. In fact, a new concept which can be best described as bunk Murphy beds is becoming popular space-saving sleeping options today, where there is a lot of “sleeping area” bundled into a single piece of furniture.

Portable beds

A new concept also known as the “Hotel room” or “Bed on wheels,” this piece of furniture that looks like a refrigerator on wheels includes a fold out bed on one side and a desk or storage space on the other side, along with a wraparound curtain for privacy. Moreover, the entire unit has wheels, which means it is portable and can be moved to any space convenient to the homeowners.

Trapdoor beds

A unique and ingenious idea for one bedroom apartments, beds being tucked under trapdoors in the floor are great space savers. Once the door is shut, you get all the floor space back.

Elements of a Country House Design

country house garden 1400622 m Elements of a Country House Design

Country House

A country house is a fairy tale dream home that looks picture perfect on any landscape. The rustic finish combined with contemporary settings make it one of the most sought after home designs today. Be it big or small, country house design is characterised with countryside kitchen and a grand living room and is sure to give a pastoral, lived-in charm to your house that is relaxing and comfortable. Apart from the lush green gardens, well-proportioned tapering roofs, charming windows, the country house design is perfect for your family gatherings and get-togethers with beautiful front porches and huge backyards for barbeques.

Types of country house designs

There are several different styles of country house designs like Norman, England, Georgian, Dutch Colonial, European, Tudor, Victorian and so on. You could either choose a design that suits your style or mix-and-match the different designs to create a unique one. A French kitchen will look amazing in a Norman style house and a European style house with an England style porch is sure to attract all.

Here are some elements of country house that would change your dream home into an appealing country house.

Beautiful front porches

A beautiful porch in front of the house not only enhances the look of the whole house but also makes the country house look larger by extending the living space. Be it a curved porch or a wrap-around design, front porch provides a comfortable way to relax and enjoy your evenings with a cup of tea. A pretty little swing in your front porch will add a little more fun to your evenings.

Multi-storeys

A country house can be one or more storeys high depending on your needs and also on the style you choose. A house with more storeys looks stylish with more well-proportioned windows and tapered roofs. The extra storeys give more space and privacy inside the house and also add a sophisticated look to the house giving way to grand entry way and elaborate staircases.

Gardening

A perfectly maintained garden is a key to any country house. Apart from providing plenty of cooling and fresh air inside of the house, a garden accentuates the look of the house and adds a tranquil atmosphere. It makes a perfect venue for your house parties and get-togethers.

Interiors

The interiors of a typical country house have high ceilings, wood beamed walls, tiled floor and fancy windows and doors. The interior of a country house with many storeys can be divided into proper areas to provide privacy. While the first storey can include a living room, dining and kitchen, the upper storeys can have the bedrooms and study.

A living room with a majestic fireplace is a must for a country house. Highly decorated stone or limestone mantles over the fireplace gives the house a sense of grandeur. A large showcase displaying antique artefacts can also substitute a fireplace. The living room can include a foyer or just the staircase to access the upper floors. An artistically designed staircase with beautiful patterned thick wrought iron banisters will give it a more rustic finish.

A classic kitchen is the centre of attraction in any county house. A beautiful kitchen with high beams, the right flooring and large central counter is sure to transform a simple kitchen into an extraordinary one. An open-plan kitchen is also a great choice for a country kitchen.

Flooring plays an important role in a country house design. While wood flooring is a popular choice, stone tiles made of terra cotta and limestone can be laid in traditional patterns to create an authentic rustic atmosphere.

Windows and doors give a traditional look to the country house and are a perfect way to circulate fresh air in the house. Wood shutter windows that open out like doors rather than slide will give a typical country house effect.

Other elements of the house like a French fountain in the garden, an outdoor table setting and a large backyard will make your country house more unique. With a charming chandelier in the living room and few simple antique furniture and artefacts, you could complete the traditional look of your country home.

Famous Interior Designers and Their Styles

sofa 1341306 m Famous Interior Designers and Their Styles

Interior Designers

The demand for good interior designers has gone up considerably, with people giving as much importance to the interiors of buildings and homes as to structure architecture and exteriors. Although it may seem glamorous, their work is anything, but simple – the work to maximize the room by making use of décor, furniture and accessories to enhance the space is difficult and requires tons of imagination. Summarized below is a list of some of the most famous designers of 2013–14 and why their styles of decorating are so popular –

Mario Buatta – Adding life

Mario Buatta’s love for chintz is legendary – he incorporates the beautiful floral fabric into each one of his accessories for his masterful décor, right from curtains to sofa upholstery. He believes in decorating each room in a different color – his favorites being Prussian-blue, leaf-green and lemon yellow – in order for each space to have its own mood. He also believes in adding life to a room by opting for specific objects such as patterned quilts, baskets, books and bookcases and plants. Combining contemporary and vintage pieces is his idea of bestowing the room with an intriguing personality.

Mariette Himes Gomez – Pitch perfect

Restrained, disciplined, rich and elegant – Mariette Himes Gomez’s style gives every room an elegant serenity. Using lots of white in walls, upholstery and floors, coupled with dark wood furniture, her idea of a room is inviting and comfortable, decorated in muted, subtle and soft colors. Also, she believes that every room in the house needs at least one character chair for personality, making a room look more expensive and offering it a focal point.

Jan Showers – An interesting mix

Jan Showers is one of those interior designers whose style is relaxed yet luxurious and glamorous – a little bit of French modern mixed with old Hollywood. Simple yet wonderful fabrics, wonderful wall coverings, entryway art, huge mirrors, secondary seating areas, elegant and eye-catching displays and souvenirs and dimensional pillows on couches, chairs and sofas in various seating areas are more her style, as they tend to add interesting detail to any room.

Anthony Baratta – Color happy

Color takes a new meaning in Anthony Baratta’s interior designs, which have been some of the most happy, warm and colorful creations for more than 30 years. Right from yellow and white striped wallpapers, red chaise lounges and patterned Prussian blue couches to red draperies, wooden ceilings and eccentric pieces of art for the walls, Anthony Baratta’s interior designs are in the ratios of one-third of function to two-thirds of delight.

Nate Berkus – Personal touch

“Use what speaks personally to you” – that is what one of the most eclectic of interior designers Nate Berkus recommends. His idea is to use objects that reflect the personality of the homeowner, rather than simply copying the living room in a magazine. Vintage objects from antique stores, unique flea market finds and special collectibles from your next holiday including woolen throws for furniture and funky wallpapers are his eclectic choice of accessories for interior décor.

Wind Energy – An Ideal Home Solution

solan energy 300x236 Wind Energy – An Ideal Home Solution

Wind Energy for an Ideal Home

Wind energy in today’s age makes for an ideal home solution for generating one’s own electricity. With rising electricity costs and high monthly utility bills, harnessing the wind’s energy serves as a potentially long term, non-polluting and renewable form of energy. Not only does it help in cutting utility bills but it also helps homeowners to cut their carbon footprint and even store electricity for a calm, non-windy day. Wind turbines, which were usually seen in the open countryside and remote villages, have now found new homes in urban areas and cities with the objective of generating clean energy.

Harnessing wind energy

Residential windmills, known as residential wind turbines, are smaller prototypes of the huge windmills and are the perfect clean electricity and energy solution for homes. These wind turbines, although a little expensive in their initial setup, produce clean electricity and energy for a lifetime. Simple and increasingly popular, the smaller residential turbines are suitable to be employed on properties as small as one acre of land in most areas of the country. In fact, coastal areas of the country are already making use of their prime location next to the sea and have installed small wind turbines to harness the wind in the area into energy.

Advantages

The popularity of wind energy as an ideal home solution for energy and electricity needs is slowly growing. Firstly, the costs of installing residential turbines for harnessing wind energy have decreased considerably in the last 20 years. Although the installation cost is still on the higher side, the long term benefits due to lower operational and maintenance costs and the decreasing nature of such costs due to technological advancements make wind energy a popular choice. Secondly, the energy generated is clean and green. Today when the world is focused on sustainable living and energy, individuals can do their bit and to reduce the carbon footprint. Residential wind turbines are incredibly space efficient and are an attractive option for big bungalows and independent homes that usually rely on diesel generators. These generators, apart from raking up a huge electricity bill, are expensive to buy and maintain.

Things to remember

While these residential wind turbines might be attractive for homeowners with large electricity bills, families whose electricity bills run under INR 2,000 per month might not find the idea very feasible. Also, the more devices you intend to run on wind energy, such as water heaters and clothes dryers, the more expensive turbine one is going to need. Hence, one should carefully analyze the home’s electricity and energy needs before zeroing in on the idea of wind turbines.

Moreover, electricity production from a wind turbine depends on a lot of factors, including air temperature in the area, season, the location of the house, and wind speed. Hence, apart from the turbine itself, the home might require various monitoring systems that could be expensive.

Overall, wind energy serves most domestic energy needs and proves to be one of the most ideal home solutions for harnessing energy.

Home Insurance Quotes – How to Select the Best?

hands holding house 400 clr 9640 2 300x279 Home Insurance Quotes – How to Select the Best?

Home Insurance Quotes

With the insurance market buzzing with numerous home insurance quotes from several providers, it is no secret that the quest to find the best quote just got more daunting. Since owning a home has been the biggest cornerstone of the Indian dream, choosing the right home insurance is only a matter of understanding and grasping home insurance fundamentals and comparing several quotes before zeroing in on one. Summarized below are the steps to go about choosing the best home insurance policy that there is for you –

Calculating your home’s replacement cost and value

While calculating their home’s replacement cost, homeowners should consider the cost of rebuilding the house if it were destroyed by any calamity. Additionally, they should also include the value of their personal property within the house such as clothing, appliances, valuables, jewelry and furniture too. If there are other unique features to the house and your belongings such as a unique, hard-to-duplicate floor tile, fur coats or stamp collections, then they should consider those, as well. While looking for insurance options, they should choose one that covers most of the above, if not all.

Do your research?

Home insurance quotes differ in their coverage features. The most basic form of home insurance covers the cost of replacing the bricks and mortar cost of rebuilding the house, but certain insurance policies cover the contents too, especially when the homeowners are traveling abroad. Understanding and fact-checking what the policy covers and matching it with what you require is the first step, as you may be surprised by what is and isn’t covered. Some even cover liabilities and loss of use of home when repairs are being made to the house.

Seeking out policies

You should narrow down a list of insurance providers that fit your needs and requirements the most based on certain major aspects about the insurance provider and their policies. These aspects include the reputation of the company, the customer service model, the past track record of how rapid and quick their claims process is and what kind of deductibles their policies offer, as high deductibles will reduce the annual premium you pay for home insurance.

Comparing policies

Any comparison, especially when it comes to choosing the best home insurance policy, requires tenacity and patience. Most of the people jump to conclusions by simply comparing the annual premium offered, which is a big mistake since they do not end up considering the coverage amounts that the policy dictates. The smart and the savvy insurance shopper will create a spreadsheet outlining the various aspects of the policies he/she has narrowed down. Exact comparisons tend to reveal slightest discrepancies such as why premium amounts vary.

The Final Choice

Home insurance quotes, even after thorough comparison, end up confusing many. The more savvy ones will not risk long-term financial ruin for simply saving a few dollars each year. Underinsured homes, while being rebuilt, can cause considerable losses to homeowners. The wise and patient ones will listen to recommendations, understand their own research and pursue full and sufficient insurance.

Lighting for Luxury Penthouses

Enhance lighting of your house 300x187 Lighting for Luxury Penthouses

Lighting for Penthouses

Penthouses are modern architectural wonders and their décor and interior design have always been contemporary in element. Lighting is a very vital element of all interior design and where penthouses are concerned, having the correct lights for each space would add the right luxury element.

Living room

Living rooms in penthouses are often designed around the view that the resident would enjoy. Having the best view of city silhouettes are the best perks of living in a penthouse and you would be in a real estate heaven if the penthouse overlooks the sea. Where the view is spectacular, recess lighting would be the best option as it keeps the space lighted without being intrusive. For task lighting, you could opt for table lamps for floor lamps depending on the décor style. Since most penthouses opt for contemporary design, a sleek table lamp could be used. If your ceiling height is large then you could opt for large sized pendant lights too.

Dining room

The most popular vote for dining room lighting goes to pendant lights. Clusters of bulbs hanging together in varying heights are probably the ultimate contemporary element that could be added to the décor. If you have a large table, you could opt for a contemporary chandelier.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms too are designed to get the perfect views for the resident. Most prefer a romantic setting for their bedrooms hence a vintage mini chandelier would be a great choice. Wall sconces on either side of the bed eliminate the need for bedside lamps that add a certain fuzzy detail to the décor. Bedrooms that have great views could also opt for recess lights to illuminate the space.

Kitchens

Kitchens are probably the only place that needs all the primary element of lighting; task, recess and ambient lighting. The kitchen island requires more than one pendant and since contemporary is the key décor element, pendant lights in varying colours would look spectacular. Some opt for LED lights to act as recess lights. If the kitchen has an open concept then a couple of mini chandeliers brings in a traditional element to the dining table. Some like it vintage and opt for tiffany pendants while others install industrial lamps to bring in an authentic twenties feel.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are the truly luxury elements of penthouses. A space to relax and enjoy, the lighting here needs to be soft and soothing. Wall sconces for the vanity corner is the norm in lighting the industry and a few recess lights could dot the ceiling to give additional light. For the luxury bathtub, opt for a stunning chandelier to emit soft crystal lights to remind you about all the good things that life can offer.

All About Andhra Traditional Home

ivy covered house 400 clr 12466 4 262x300 All About Andhra Traditional Home

Traditional Home

The built and the make of a traditional home in Andhra Pradesh has evolved with time, although most of the old, independent homes in the state are mostly built in the same fashion. Traditional Andhra homes in the villages and the towns are unalike, differing in style, make, and build but they all have the same home culture everywhere.

Make and build

Local village houses in the small clusters of village communities in Andhra Pradesh are referred to as “Chuttillu” (Chutt – small, illu – house in Telugu), which essentially means a round house. In cyclone-prone areas, agricultural and fishing communities usually build such homes, the shape of which helps them battle against the raging winds. The house has an outer circular space which envelops an inner circular room that serves as a storage area on one end where the grain for the family is stored, and the kitchen on the other. Another cooking area (called the vantsala) and a shelter for the bullock cart (called the aedul bandi jaaga) lies on the outside. The roofs are either flat (mud, timber) under an outer, sloping thatched roof made with Palmyra timber for the finish. The walls are usually made of mud using the cob wall technique and lime washed for the finish.

An urban traditional home in Andhra has a rectangular floor plan with a south-facing entrance. Compound walls and trees shade and protect the house and the area around it. The house is a joint plan of three linear, individual homes with separate toilets, bathrooms and kitchens, common courtyard and verandah and thresholds at every door. The build makes cross-ventilation easy, allowing the flow of air throughout the three structures. The house is characterized by thick walls, cuddapah tiles (now unpolished rough tiles) for the flooring and a sandy outer finish with little vegetation around the house that minimizes radiation and absorbs the excess heat.

Culture

The culture of traditional Andhra homes usually remains the same across the state. The thresholds of the doors are decorated with green, red and yellow colors, having evolved from the custom of applying turmeric to prevent the entry of insects during the harvest season. The thresholds are given much importance and the decoration is done to highlight them and make them prominent. Homes usually have narrow staircases, the space under which is used for storing frequently-used items. There are cuddapah stone benches between every adjacent gate of the house, and are used by family members to sit and chat with friends and neighbors during evening time.

The terrace of a traditional home in Andhra is an important space. Used by children to study during evening time, it is also used for daily household activities such as drying spices and clothes. An important feature is that the family sleeps outdoors or on the terrace during summers. Lastly, a well in the courtyard was the only source of water (in older homes) and all related activities such as washing and bathing usually happened happen around the well.

Furnishing One Bedroom Apartments

One Bedroom Apartments

Furnishing one bedroom apartments can be a challenge but with the right furniture that blends utility and style, one could get ample space that would be as inviting as a four-bedroom villa. Here are a few ideas to furnish your one bedroom apartments –

Furniture

Selecting the right furniture goes a long way in creating an inviting space and where one bedroom apartments are concerned, one needs to keep the utility aspect in mind. Multi-purpose furniture is the best bet for limited space. You need to opt for furniture that keeps the storage aspect in mind and it must have more than one function. For example, you could opt for seating that allows you to store books and magazines underneath. You could also open up more space in the living room by arranging the seating in a corner preferably overlooking the window. One way to get more out of seating in the living room is to create a banquette that can double up as a dining room seats. All you need to do is pull up a table across the banquette!

Colours

Bold colours and vivid hues bring small spaces dramatically to life. Go for bold strokes of colours; purple, yellow, bright green that would give the illusion of space. If painting the interiors are not an option, then you could bring in the colour using accessories. Drapes, furniture, cushions, upholstery, there are various options to bring in vivid colours to the forefront. Area rugs can be used to incorporate monochrome colours and patterns and they help to create clear lines to demarcate spaces and nooks within the living room.

Inviting entry

One can’t expect a stunning foyer when they step into one bedroom apartments, but you could surprise them with a large closed cabinet to store footwear. The top of the cabinet can be used a mantle to showcase art, curios or even an antique mirror. Mirrors can be used to create an illusion of a larger space and decorative mirrors are pieces of art in their own right.

Focal Point

The rule of the thumb in interior decoration is to create a focal point that would set the style of the room. In large villas, foyer could be the focal point with stunning chandeliers that would give the right idea of ornate grandeur that could be expected in the rest of the space. In one bedroom apartments, the focal point can be the entertainment nook. A large TV cabinet with a wall mounted TV and comfortable couches around would be more than inviting.

Creative Touches

Rental apartments are tough to makeover because of contractual restrictions, but that need not deter your creative touches. If the sink is an out-dated model then you can work around by draping skirt that would effectively hide it and hang towels around it. Adapt your apartment to suit the style that you want. It just takes wee bit of creativity to do that.

Style Ideas for a Holiday House

christmas time 1375349 m Style Ideas for a Holiday House

Holiday House

Holiday house is the ultimate refuge for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. That means, your holiday house should ideally be situated some distance away from the city or in a different city altogether. With real estate perking up like anything, many are investing on a holiday house in pleasant places like Bangalore where they would love to spend a week or ten days shopping, socializing or merely enjoying the nature. Here are some style ideas that can be used for your holiday house –

Inspiring surroundings

A holiday house becomes a worthy investment when you spend more and more time in it. But a vacation house must be an inspirational abode and must have the vacation vibe in it to get you relaxed and chill. Most interior decorators take inspiration from the surroundings to design a house. By blending in nature with the house design, you could bring in natural textures, colours and patterns and make your home a seamless extension of the nature outside.

No frills, no clutter

Holiday house is not a storage basement to put in unwanted furniture and stuff. This is an investment where you would want to relax, chill and entertain. That means no clutter. Go for a minimalistic look with furniture that complements the décor. Build in cabinets and smart storage spaces to give yourself as much space as possible. Minimal furniture and less clutter mean less time spent on cleaning and more for relaxing!

Colours

Holidays are all about restful atmosphere, laughter, companionship and family. Decorate your rooms with restful colours that connote with nature. Shades of green, blue, pale pink and all shades of white bring out much enthusiasm for life. If your holiday house is a beach retreat then go for all white.

Lighting

Lighting for holiday house depends totally on the type of the house you have. If it is a manor styled house, then traditionally styled chandeliers, wall sconces in crystal and wrought iron will set the right mood for some English entertainment. If your holiday house is barn or cottage inspired, then eclectic lighting and vintage tiffany would be the best choice. Beach inspired retreats can go for themed lighting right from pendants to mini chandeliers.

Outdoors

Swimming pools are an integral element of all holiday houses. Right from beach houses to garden cottages swimming pools bring on the holiday mood for all. Well-manicured gardens or natural foliage you could go for any type of outdoors so long as it suits the style of the house. Beach houses go for rock sculptors and sand exteriors while garden cottages usually have soft grass and orchards full of fruit trees.

Home Decorating Tips – How to Lay an Easy Garden?

spring 1442505 m Home Decorating Tips – How to Lay an Easy Garden?

Home Decorating Tips

Preparing good outdoor setups, especially gardens, are much in the limelight in home decorating today. Raised beds and kitchen gardens are every homeowner’s dream come true – they can grow a plethora of home veggies and beautiful flowers right in their backyard. Although the task is time-consuming, a little bit of muscle, lots of planning and the joy if having a garden will make the task worthwhile.

Choose

Begin by determining if you want to create a raised bed or convert a portion of the garden area into a full-fledged garden. Raised beds provide lesser problems in weeding, harvesting and waterlogged soils, but it is entirely up to the homeowner as to what kind of garden he/she wants while home decorating.

Marking it off

Begin by defining how big you want your garden area or raised bed to be. Most people begin with a 4×4-foot square, which most people can reach the middle from both sides of. For raised beds, rake and level the ground for it to lay flat and then proceed to build walls for the space. Lastly, lay a cardboard in the box for it to completely line the bottom of the 4X4 area.

For garden areas, kill the grass by covering the ground with few layers of overlapped wet newspaper to stop weeds and grass from growing in that space. Also, clear the space of other materials such as rock, etc. Create a boundary using wood and nails, or, if one wants a round garden, then use a rope or hose to lay out the area, adjusting the position of the rope/hose to create a smooth and curved boundary.

Filling the soil

Once the raised bed has been built, you need to fill it with topsoil. Although soil mixtures depend a lot on the climate that one lives in, some all-purpose soil mixtures include a mixture with 50% topsoil and 50% high-quality compost, whereas another could be 1/3 horticultural vermiculite, ¼ blended compost and 1/3 peat moss. However, whatever soil mixture one uses, a simple test to determine its friability, arability and softness is by trying to sink one’s forefinger all the way to the knuckle into the soil.

Contrast this to the garden area of your lawn, which is probably so dense and packed that you cannot sink your finger into it at all. In this case, dig up the earth and carefully sift the soil, removing root parts, weed and sod so that it may not grow back next year as weeds. Water the area well and one is ready to plant.

Laying out individual beds

Home decorating gardens also involves planting many plants instead of one singular huge garden. Planting several permanent beds within the large, rectangular raised bed or garden makes tiling soil annually unnecessary and also avoids compaction. Also, seeds and plants can be planted much closer to each other as compared to traditional gardens and one can have several beds of different plants in one single garden. In order to do so, outline each bed independently with limestone, sticks and string to establish permanent beds.

SHR027: Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

carbon footprint 172x300 SHR027: Reduce Your Carbon FootprintQuite simply a carbon footprint is a term used to describe a person’s, family’s, or company’s impact on the environment around them. It takes in the measurement of the carbon dioxide that you personally release into the atmosphere on a daily basis just through your everyday activities. Carbon dioxide is, what scientists consider to be, the major gas contributing to the greenhouse effect. By being aware of your “carbon footprint” you can make informed decisions that lessen your impact on the environment. Studio Flat

Designing a studio flat is challenging indeed. And yet, just when you think you’ve seen exemplary examples of small apartments making efficient use of every last inch of space, along comes some new, physics-defying yet beautiful way of making the most out of living in a small apartment.

Multi-functional furniture and their arrangement

Where space is at a premium, almost every piece of furniture must double up with more than one purpose. Murphy beds fit best in studio apartments, wherein it can be used as seating during the daytime and as a bed at night. Bunk beds end up saving much space, as do floating tabletops which double up as bedside tables without occupying floor space. Moroever, studio apartment should incorporate sliding doors for washrooms, closets and entryways, which not only end up saving space but also look elegant.

Arranging the furniture efficiently is also crucial. Curtains and storage racks easily be used as walls for kitchens and bedrooms in an open floor plan. Kitchen islands can not only serve as a dining table but also be a visual divider between the living area and the kitchen. If the studio apartment has a loft, then the space can easily into a bedroom, tucked away from prying eyes and offering tons of privacy. Angling furniture around the curves of the house saves much space and also maintains the design of the space.

Color theme

A unified color palette which consists of lighter and pale colors such as whites, beige, cream and other neutral colors helps bind the house together and makes every contrasting aspect such as furniture, showpieces and art in a small studio flat stand out. Moroever, these light colors give the impression of the space being larger than it is.

Other décor

Small-sized furniture such as pouffes, bean bags, Parisian club chairs and other classy and inexpensive flea market–finds are the perfect scaled-down furniture for small apartments. If the flat has a narrow hallway, turning the wall into a photo montage of memories makes the house feel like home rather than a thoroughfare, no matter how small it is. Wooden flooring is as elegant as flooring can get, and the warm color also binds the interiors together. Reflective surfaces such as storage units and traditional Moroccan mirrors, when placed in the room, visually expand the space and give the impression of it being large and comfy.

Kitchens

If no formal kitchen has been built into the original floor plan, then a niche can easily be converted into a petite but efficient kitchen using an eclectic assortment and clever arrangement of cabinets, storage racks, stools, chairs and a small dining table. A miniature stainless-steel sink set in the countertop keeps the space neat and makes working in the kitchen easy.

Storage

One needs to get creative for storage in a studio flat. People should go in for built-in storages, which are not only tucked away from sight but also take up no floor space. Other nooks such as staircases, room dividers, and areas under staircases can serve as excellent storage spaces.

These are space saving cabinets help to hide away all those myriad random utility items that you do not want to display, but makes space to display items that you would want to. Most even come with a niche seating option in the end. Storage walls are perfect accessories for studio homes and they can act as dividers if the apartment has an open floor plan. These can be used to demarcate the space that divides the bedroom from the living. Some custom-made storage walls can be built into the bedroom, where it can even incorporate task lighting to read books while lying down.

Creative Kitchen Storage

When space is sacred sadly it is the kitchen that suffers the most. Though the kitchen is the most utilitarian space in the home, most builders become Mr. Scoorge when it comes to kitchen space. Storage is the most important aspect of kitchen and if there is no adequate space to store all those jars of pulses and spices, you just need to make space on the wall. Some homes have pull-out doors for their bathrooms and this space can be cleverly fused into pocket storage shelves to store bath accessories such as shampoos, soap bars, loofah etc. If your home has pillars then, these can be cleverly used with three-dimensional cabinets built-in to display books, vases, antique items and other curiosities.

Nested tables that can display multiple items, kitchen countertops that can also serve as a two-seat dining table, living room seats with storage option underneath and dividers that can used on both sides to store and display items.
