Building Design Trends

Unlike interior design trends, building design trends tend to move slowly. The past few years saw a gradual shift in building design in Bangalore towards green building. With the focus clearly shifting towards building sustainable communities, most builders are trying to fix energy saving appliances, windmills, solar panels to save energy within the confines of their community. Here is a list of top five building design trends that we will see this year –

Open concept kitchen

Interior design experts are of the opinion that the walls are going to come down this year, thanks to open concept kitchen. Open concept kitchen is not a new trend. It has been around for many years but it is only the recent years that it got its due attention. Kitchen will no longer be a separate space disconnected from the main house. With the kitchens opening up to the living space, kitchen appliances are also taking a new ‘avatar’ as they are being designed to blend into the kitchen background seamlessly instead of standing out like a sore thumb.

Neutral Colours

Beige has given way to other neutral colours like white. Though some still opt for beige as it is timeless, white has emerged as a clear winner. Shades of white alternating from antique white to arctic white are making the rounds. However interior designers are striving to strike a balance by adding a splash of colour wherever possible with a brilliantly hued cushion or a metallic hued backsplash.

Home for the life

With real estate being so expensive, most of us buy a home to last a lifetime. And that is probably why people wait for that perfect dream home to come by so that they could do it right. Many residents want to think long-term when it comes to the building design. Those who are booking duplex villas prefer to have their master bedroom in the ground floor. Today most builders are also offering extendable villas so that they have an option to extend the space to accommodate larger families. Bathrooms are becoming for friendlier for senior citizens with barrier free shower areas and kitchens have become user-friendly for the disabled to access.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz has replaced good old granite as countertops in kitchen. Though granite is a strong material and has been used for years as a kitchen countertop, quartz might just replace it very easily as it is as hard as the granite and is a very practical choice of material for kitchens. It is durable, easy to clean and non-porous and it lasts for years.

Energy Efficient and Water Saving Appliances

With many builders building green, they have also gone all out to provide the residents with appliances that would save energy and water. Most gated communities are fitted with water treatment plants, rain water harvesting and recycling plants to save within the community. Solar panels are being installed to provide hot water, windmills to power electricity and green environment to reduce the usage of air conditioning.
