Home Interior Design and Lighting

Home interior design trends are slowly shifting from lavish aspects to practical ones, especially in the aspect of lighting. Practical lighting can make a dramatic difference to the lives of the inhabitants and is a key element to the comfort and beauty level of any home. Home lighting has evolved from incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps to CFLs and the latest in technology, the light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Not only do they guarantee energy efficiency and savings on energy bills, but they also tend to last longer compared to the other lighting technology. Flexible, available in a plethora of colors and designs, LEDs and CFLs are at the forefront of practical and beautiful lighting in homes. Summarized below are the lighting features for every room of the house –

Living room

Living room is used for a variety of needs. Display cabinets can be fitted with under-cabinet lighting to enhance the beauty of the displayed showpieces. Portable lamps such as torchieres, floor lamps and table lamps not only have the flexibility to be moved around but also deliver accent, ambient and task lighting for various activities. Ambient or general lighting from chandeliers, ceiling lights and wall sconces, provides overall illumination. Also, home interior design today uses accent lighting in the house to add drama and focus the eye on showpieces, sculptures, paintings and houseplants.

Kitchen

A kitchen is a modern home’s epicenter of activity – for cooking as well as entertaining purposes. Under-cabinet lighting can be used here as well to illuminate the countertops. Sinks and islands can be fitted with recessed down lights that not only give people the necessary light to work about the kitchen but also make the place look attractive. A small chandelier can provide the general lighting.

Dining area

Beautiful and functional, the center point for dining area lighting is an artsy, decorative chandelier that is suspended over the dining table and connected to dimmer switches. When in need, one can create a romantic, soft atmosphere by keeping the lights low as well as increase the lighting during formal dinners and social gatherings. Track and recessed lighting on the walls around the dining area lend more light to the space by softly illuminating the surroundings and not being harsh on the eyes.

Bathroom

The once-utilitarian and humble bathroom has evolved into a private retreat for self-indulgence, escape and relaxation in home interior design, where the lighting should be functional but intricate. Small mirrors can be fitted with decorative wall sconces on either side and large ones can be fitted with a strip of three–four horizontal vanity lights to ensure that the area has sufficient illumination. Similarly, tub and shower lighting also should be fitted with recessed lights to ensure brightness.

Bedroom

Bedroom lighting, again, is a combination of utility and beauty. Closets in the bedroom can be fitted with CFLs since they do not take up space and provide good lighting. Wall sconces, recessed down lights, chandeliers and ceiling fixtures can provide a general, ambient lighting for the room. Portable and swing arm lamps next to the bed provide for the reading light.
