Spreading his divine grace and boyish charms, Lord Muruga residing in Vallakottai Murugan Temple is located conveniently in the highway between Sriperambudur and Singaperumal Koil. Unlike other temples dedicated to Lord Muruga, where the residing main deity is small in size, Vallakottai Subramanya Swamy is the tallest Murugan statue in India. Vallakottai, known as Kodai Nagar in ancient times, was a part of Ilanji Kingdom.

Rich in heritage, Vallakottai Murugan Temple was constructed under the rule of King Bageerathan of Sankondpuram. This 1200-year-old cultural heritage temple has an interesting legend. It was believed to be the fort of ‘Vallan’, a demon or asura, who tortured Devas and Lord Muruga destroyed the asura to bring peace to the land. Vallan’s death wish was fulfilled and the Lord blessed the town with his name ‘Vallankottai’ or Fort of Vallan.

Tirupugazh, the Tamil ancient literature, has eight songs composed by Arunagirinadhar, an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga, as a dedication to Vallakottai Murugan. The temple has a holy tank called Vajra Theertham and its history are also quite interesting. According to temple legends a holy dip in the tank for seven weeks chanting the ‘Om Saravanabava’ mantra can restore all that we have lost in this life.

Celebrating all the festivals of Lord Muruga, Vallakottai Murugan Temple is well-known for its grandeur and rituals, reflecting age-old traditions. Thursdays are considered very auspicious for Lord Subramanya Swamy who along with his consorts, Valli and Devyanai are adorned with diamonds for special darshan. Recently renovated, the temple has a fresh new look, with an old-world charm.

Typical to all Murugan temples, devotees get to see the majestic peacock, Lord Subramanya Swami’s Vahanam, gracefully gliding and dancing in the temple premises. Not only does Lord Muruga shower his blessings on his devotees, the temple administration also feed over hundred needy people every day with its efficient ‘Annadaanam’ scheme.
