Moving House Checklist

Anyone who has ever shifted homes will tell you that a moving house checklist is a must if you are planning to move soon. Not only is moving house, physically and emotionally daunting task but it also involves lots of pre-planning and preparation. Right from hiring movers to wrapping up dues, each step should be carefully planned in tandem with all the members of the family. Summarized below are the top things that should definitely be included in your checklist –

Booking companies – Professional moving and disposing companies for your home essentials and vehicles should be booked well in advance. Additionally, remind them the evening before you’re moving.

Collecting packing material and beginning packing – Although you’ve professional movers, you wouldn’t want your precious items to be broken and you’d rather pack them yourselves. Begin collecting bags, newspaper, and boxes for the same.

Travel documents – Separate and arrange yours and your family members’ travel documents safely so that they do not get mixed up in the packing process leading to some last minute tense moments.

Food – Appoint someone to keep running down to food stores for food and gradually start emptying the fridge and larder.

Special items – One of the most important things to be included in a moving house checklist is making a note of all the precious items that you own, which you should personally pack and kept close. These may include valuable art, vintage collections, valuables and jewelry. Also, if you’re transporting plants, water them lightly before packing.

Backup
– Take a backup of all your important files and documents including your travel documents such as passport, visa, and other forms. If your laptop or computer has important information relating to the house or office, delete it and take a backup of the data on a separate hard disk.

Notify – Before you leave, you need to systematically notify a bunch of people. These include the milkman and newspaper vendor whom you need to tell when they need to stop delivering milk and newspaper to the house. You need to notify your post office and leave a forwarding address for your mail. You also need to go to your bank and inform them about your move, putting in requests for change of address. Lastly, you need to clear your dues with the water, gas, phone and power companies and notify your dates of leaving for them to disconnect the utilities the day after you move.

Limit weights of cartons – Whether you’re transporting the contents of your house by road, sea or air, you should remember to limit the weights of the cartons to a set amount lest there is any damage to the goods inside. It is a good idea to have numerous boxes rather than hefty ones since there are weight restrictions during transportation too.

Forwarding addresses – Leave forwarding addresses with your neighbors, friends and family in case, anything is left behind or if important mail needs to be forwarded.

Although a daunting task, having a moving house checklist makes the process of moving a lot smoother.
