Home Decorating Tips

Preparing good outdoor setups, especially gardens, are much in the limelight in home decorating today. Raised beds and kitchen gardens are every homeowner’s dream come true – they can grow a plethora of home veggies and beautiful flowers right in their backyard. Although the task is time-consuming, a little bit of muscle, lots of planning and the joy if having a garden will make the task worthwhile.

Choose

Begin by determining if you want to create a raised bed or convert a portion of the garden area into a full-fledged garden. Raised beds provide lesser problems in weeding, harvesting and waterlogged soils, but it is entirely up to the homeowner as to what kind of garden he/she wants while home decorating.

Marking it off

Begin by defining how big you want your garden area or raised bed to be. Most people begin with a 4×4-foot square, which most people can reach the middle from both sides of. For raised beds, rake and level the ground for it to lay flat and then proceed to build walls for the space. Lastly, lay a cardboard in the box for it to completely line the bottom of the 4X4 area.

For garden areas, kill the grass by covering the ground with few layers of overlapped wet newspaper to stop weeds and grass from growing in that space. Also, clear the space of other materials such as rock, etc. Create a boundary using wood and nails, or, if one wants a round garden, then use a rope or hose to lay out the area, adjusting the position of the rope/hose to create a smooth and curved boundary.

Filling the soil

Once the raised bed has been built, you need to fill it with topsoil. Although soil mixtures depend a lot on the climate that one lives in, some all-purpose soil mixtures include a mixture with 50% topsoil and 50% high-quality compost, whereas another could be 1/3 horticultural vermiculite, ¼ blended compost and 1/3 peat moss. However, whatever soil mixture one uses, a simple test to determine its friability, arability and softness is by trying to sink one’s forefinger all the way to the knuckle into the soil.

Contrast this to the garden area of your lawn, which is probably so dense and packed that you cannot sink your finger into it at all. In this case, dig up the earth and carefully sift the soil, removing root parts, weed and sod so that it may not grow back next year as weeds. Water the area well and one is ready to plant.

Laying out individual beds

Home decorating gardens also involves planting many plants instead of one singular huge garden. Planting several permanent beds within the large, rectangular raised bed or garden makes tiling soil annually unnecessary and also avoids compaction. Also, seeds and plants can be planted much closer to each other as compared to traditional gardens and one can have several beds of different plants in one single garden. In order to do so, outline each bed independently with limestone, sticks and string to establish permanent beds.
