The Borra caves of Visakhapatnam is located in the Ananthagiri Hills of Arakku Valley of Vizag, Andhra Pradesh. The Borra caves are one of the deepest and largest caves in India. The water which percolates from the roof of the caves dissolves limestone which trickles drop by drop from the roof forming calcium carbonate deposits called Stalactites from the roof and when these drop on the floor form Stalagmites.

The legend says that once long time ago, a cow fell into the caves 60m and was found unharmed and safe by the cowherd. The stone inside the cave is interpreted as Shiv Linga which is believed to have saved the cow, and since then, a Shiva Temple was constructed outside the cave by the villagers. The stone formations inside the Borra caves resemble a cow’s udder and hence it is known as Gosthani.
