Front porches can be covered or otherwise and may even be columned. They are inviting, welcoming and give a great cozy look to the cottage and are great for relaxing and entertaining guests. Wide back decks are back in fashion now, and some even run the entire length of the house at the back. They are great for family dinners, barbeques and grilling get-togethers with friends.

Certain simple house plans for small cottages also feature garages, which can be used in more than just the traditional way.
